  1. I find VA Smith’s mature voice and assured phrasing remarkable and affecting. She conveys sentiment but never sentimentality: “I kiss your forehead, rest my mouth / on the moist field of your skin, look / past your theatres, cities, decades…” The imagery of pebbled avocado skin and damp coral t-shirts create a vividness that brings her friend to life while memorializing her death. Wonderful. Here’s hoping even more prestigious publications such as this pick up her work!
